"Martin Luther In His Own Words:
Essential Writings of the Reformation"
Jack D. Kilcrease
Erwin W. Lutzer
This is a great introduction to Martin Luther's writings for those interested in his works. It is a shame that not many Christians are interested in these foundational works that framed the Reformation. Many only know Luther as the ex-Catholic monk who nailed the 95 theses, some don't even know this well- known piece of knowledge. Kilcrease and Lutzer have done a great service to the Christian community in putting these short excerpts of Luther's most famous commentaries.
Centered on the five solas: Sola fide, Sola Gratia, Sola scriptura, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria (faith alone, grace alone, scripture alone, Christ alone, Glory to God alone), this book provides some of his commentary on each subject along with added commentary by both Kilcrease and Lutzer. It should pique the interest of a handful of believers (or I hope so). The study of these commentaries are not just for the student or the pastor or Bible teacher, it is also for the Christian laymen wanting a deeper knowledge of church history. More importantly, it is to acquire a gratitude for the sacrifice of all these church fathers who suffered so we may have the untarnished TRUTH. The hand of God was working then and is working still. I recommend this book to those just starting their studies, but if you want a more in-depth look at Luther's writings, I recommend reading his full commentaries, especially his commentary on Galatians. Soli Deo Gloria!
I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing without a required review positive or otherwise. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
