"Where We Belong"
By Lynn Austin
If you are a bookworm who enjoys lengthy historical romance novels, this one is for you. The story switches back and forth between 1890 to1860 and 1880s. It is told from 4 characters' perspectives: sisters, Rebecca and Flora Hawes, their butler, Soren Petersen, and their lady's maid, Kate Rafferty. Taking place on a Sinai expedition in 1890 and constantly shifting to Chicago 1860s. The novel is divided into 5 parts, first focusing in Rebecca, then Flora, Petersen and finally Kate then ending with Rebecca.
The story opens up in the Sinai desert as the sisters and their 2 young servants, as they make their way to the basilica of St. Catherine. With alternating chapters to the past. Each character reflects on their past leading them to the present.
I enjoyed the plot and the way the story was told. I don't usually enjoy books with multiple points of view, I like sticking to a one protagonist plot, but this novel was highly entertaining. The character development is excellent and the pace of the novel is good. I recommend this novel to those who enjoy middle east/Israel history, as most of the story takes place in this area. This book is definitely for the committed bookworm since it's over 450 pages long. I'm a slow reader on purpose who likes to take her time so getting through the whole book took lots of commitment.
I received a copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
