"Eschatological Discipleship: Leading Christians
to Understand Their Historical and Cultural Context"
By Trevin K. Wax
This is the first time I had ever heard the phrase "eschatological discipleship" and this is the reason why I decided to pick this book. As I'm always eager to learn more about discipleship, it made it easy for me to read through it.
Trevin Wax argues that true Christians must view eschatology in light of our times and the future. The question he poses throughout the book is "when are we? "
Wax points out how eschatology is found throughout scripture (not just the end times) in historical eras, the present and how it will play out in the future. I must say that I had never view eschatology in this way, I always tied it with the end-times.
Wax discusses the Biblical foundation of eschatology as found in the OT, the Gospels & Acts, and the Pauline letters. He also spends several chapters discussing how the enlightenment, sexual revolution, and consumerism have rivaled biblical eschatology.
The amount of research that went into the book is amazing making it more of a Biblical scholarship in nature than a simple read. Nevertheless, this book was written for the pastor, the teacher, and the layperson alike.
I received a copy of this book from B&H in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
