"Minding the Light"
Nantucket Legacy, Book 2
Suzanne Woods Fisher
The first novel in the series was great but the second one was even better! I don't know what it is about this series that has absolutely captivated me as no other has in quite a while.
The heroine of the novel, Daphne Coffin is the great-great-great-granddaughter of Great Mary and great-granddaughter of Phoebe Starbuck (heroine of the first novel). It's set in 1821 in Nantucket when the whaling business was still popular and Quakers dominated the island. Daphne is a young woman whose faith inspires others to change and encourages them to "mind the light." Her faith is genuine because she lives it out, something most Quaker Nantucketers lack. And this is the character's strongest trait and what makes this novel great.
The novel deals a lot with the topic of hypocrisy and racism. Daphne realizes that most Quakers claim to be anti-slavery but continue to shun people of color and natives. Her own mother who is an elder is a hypocrite and never changes her stance on racial prejudice.
Daphne along with Captain Ren Macy keep the reader in check as it makes you analyze yourself and ask, "Am I living out my faith?"
I appreciate the work the author has put into the novel to make it as historically accurate as possible.
Great plot, great setting, great characters, amazingly historically accurate, and a great message. What more can I ask for in a Christian Historical novel?
Looking forward to the 3rd book, "The Light Before the Day" featuring, Daphne's niece and nephew (whom she practically raised) as the protagonists!
I received a copy of this book from Revell in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
