"Made For the Journey;
One Missionary's First Year in the
Jungles of Ecuador"
By Elisabeth Elliot
Let me start off by saying that Elisabeth Elliot is one of my favorite authors and a godly woman I respect and look up to. I have read several of her books and have loved them all, I am always left deeply convicted. So reading this short autobiography was very enjoyable and humbling.
Elisabeth recounts her first ever experience as a missionary before she married Jim Elliot, before she had ever been anywhere. She briefly touches upon her training prior to getting her missionary position in the jungles of Equador, the uncomfortable journey getting there, the conditions of daily living that she had to learn to get accustomed to. She worked with the Colorado Indians along with other young single missionary women.
The reason why I say that this book is humbling is because I had this image of Elisabeth as a strong woman who lived in very uncomfortable conditions, and all the hardships she had to endure as a missionary and later as a widow. But in this book, we get a glimpse at her very real and personal struggles adjusting to missionary life. You can see her spiritual growth as well as growing as a person. So I appreciate her humility and openness with which she wrote this book. Her realness makes it easy to relate to because sometimes we have this near-perfect image of a person we admire and forget that they have or had struggles too.
I highly recommend this book to all those preparing for missions and for young Christians in general.
I received a copy of this book from Revell in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
