"Unshackled: Breaking the Strongholds
of Your Past to Recieve Complete Deliverance"
by Kathy DeGraw
I don't know where to start with this one. I hate having to write very negative reviews but I think this is an important one for those considering reading this book. In a few words, it's bad. Very bad. I don't know what I was thinking when I requested this book.
To start, the author's biography on the back gives away the author's ultra mysticism/ new age/ word of faith philosophy. Read this quote from the bio: "Kathy DeGraw is a prophetic spiritual warfare and deliverance minister who releases the love and power of God to ignite and activate people, releasing their prophetic destinies and deliver them from the bondage of the enemy."
Huh? This makes it sound like she's some type of magician or witch. (No apologies for the strong words). Even then, I decided to skim through the book in a quest to find some redeeming qualities. I found none, the little I read only made me more scared.
The book is divided into 2 parts: Finding Freedom Through Inner Healing and Deliverance, 10 Strongholds. The 10 strongholds she discusses are: fear, intimidation, control, pride, anger, rejection, unworthiness & passivity, victim & poverty mentalities, grief & loss, and addictions. Okay, fair enough, I agree that these can be strongholds in a person's life from which deliverance is needed.
She uses the phrase "self-deliverance" quite often. My question is, what is self-deliverance? The author implies that you can deliver yourself from these strongholds. I read enough to see what she meant and it scared me. She also uses the phrase "prayer of activation" at the end of each chapter. Again, these are typical phrases for Word of Faith ministers.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone and I don't know that I would call it Christian, "a book of mysticism" is more like it. I ended up throwing this book away, as I wasn't comfortable having it in my home or giving it away.
I received a copy from Chosen in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
