"50 Pentecostal and Charismatic Leaders
Every Christian Should Know"
by Dean Merrill
Having grown up in the Pentecostal church and listening to some of these men and women of God, I was looking forward to reading this new book in the "...Every Christian Should Know" series. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this one. I read 1 volume in this series (50 People Every Christian Should Know) and it was excellent, they chose great examples of Christians to profile; the author did an amazing job with the biographies.
Some of the people they chose to feature on this one have questionable teachings and beliefs. Kathyrn Kuhlman had ties with the Vatican and she married a divorced man. Kenneth Hagin is a heretic, preacher of the word of faith movement. Orals Roberts, Pat Robertson, and Mike Bickle are others that I wouldn't include in this book. These should be replaced with much better examples like Chuck Smith and Yiye Avila (who outside of Latin America is virtually unknown, but was mightily used by God throughout the world.)
Half of these people I had never even heard of but was happy to read about them. Some of my favorites which I was glad to find here are David du Plessis, Leonard Ravenhill, Derek Prince, the Sherrills, David Wilkerson, and Jim Cymbala. The biographies are very, very short though, they are definitely not as detailed as those in the other books in the series. This book is perhaps good for those who know absolutely nothing about these men and women, but for those of us who are fairly familiar with the ministries of these, the info, is basic at best.
I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to know about some of the more popular Pentecostal preachers. But I would definitely do my own research on some of these, as some of these people aren't exactly what I would call sound doctrine ministers.
I received a copy of this book from Chosen in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
