"A Midnight Dance"
by Joanna Davidson Politano
Wow I don't even know how to start with this review, the novel has left me speechless. This story is so, so good I don't know where to start.
Ella Blythe wants nothing more than to dance, ballet runs deep in her veins. Her mother, a legendary ballet dancer, now hides behind an unspoken tragic past and does not want Ella to be ruined by ballet. But after a chance encounter with a handsome dancer, Ella's desire to dance grows. Ella is given the lifetime opportunity to dance on a scholarship in the same theater where her mother danced. Determined to work her way into becoming Prima Ballerina, dancing alongside Phillipe, the handsome lead dancer she met years ago, Ella sets on a dangerous journey to find out about her mother's and father's history shrouded in mystery and many unanswered questions. But will she meet the same tragic end as the beautiful talented Delphine Bessette, famous ballet dancer or will Ella rise above her insecurities and push the past behind?
Let me start by saying how much I LOVE the way Joanna weaves faith into the story. Ella starts by questioning whether it was possible to do ballet and follow God at the same time (ballet was not considered reputable work in Victorian times). Though these doubts linger in her mind, Ella learns to incorporate faith into everything she does, in each dance move and with all her heart as a form of worship to God.
The beginning of the novel feels like a hazy dream, the way Joanna writes, it creates this dream-like, almost misty, environment, it was so strange (in a good way) I had never gotten a picture like this from a book before. But the imagery, the scenes Joanna paints...Oh my goodness leaves you without breath. I just don't know how to describe it but it draws you in, it commands all of your attention and you are helpless to do otherwise. You leave this world for just a moment.
And the characters...wow they are so real...the character development is absolutely amazing. And Jack...oh my heart! Needless to say I had never fallen in love with the hero of the story quite like I did with Jack. Ella is amazing in her own right and I was cheering her on all along I was only too happy that they both got the ending that they deserved.
And the plot twists! So many of them and so good, I did not see them coming they only served to keep me glued to the story and excited to find out what happened next AND to shock the living daylights out of me!
I could go on but I'll tie the ribbon right here. You need to read this novel, no, seriously, you really do! This is a book I'll definitely read again in the future...with pleasure!
